After talking about it for months, here is the official Happenings newsletter that I finally set up on my website. I am aiming to send one monthly to share things I am working on plus recommendations - occasionally twice a month if there’s a lot to share. The reason it is called Happenings is because the first ‘work-in-progress’ version of this newsletter featured Annie Ernaux who wrote a book titled L'Événement which was adapted to a film directed by Audrey Diwan with Happening as the English title. So I thought to myself a plural version would work as a title for this newsletter.
For this official first edition, I will try and keep it light. Although it’s only the third week of January and there’s been a lot of news to process.
I first posted the above image on my blog on November 6, 2024. After reading who won the US elections, I thought of James Benning’s film, glory, a two hour single-channel video installation that shows the American flag getting torn apart during a sea storm. I remembered it again on January 20. To me, the image really captures the current state of politics and of course climate change. But one is trying to hold on to hope and optimism. Trying. The photo below is from my walk on January 1 at Creek Harbour. I like to start the year near water, it relaxes me and reminds me to feel hopeful. ”There’s something about water, the life and death and formlessness it holds, that I want to return to on occasions of beginning or end, and each new year’s day is both.
